Watch the Flowers!

Valentines Day is right around the corner, watch your pets around these flowers.....they can be harmful:

Different flowers in the lily family are extremeley poisonous to pets. Cats are more common lily poisoning victims than dogs, but they are toxic to both species. They are also very popular bouquet items. Lilies, Tiger Lilies, Easter Lilies, Tulips, and Calla Lilies are just some of the toxic plants found in the lily plant family.

Some other bouquet favorites that are likely to make your pet sick include:
-Baby's Breath
-Bird of Paradise
-Carnations
-Daffodils
-Dahlias
-Daisies
-Irises

-Peonies

Make sure to keep your flowers away from your pets and have a Yappy Valentines!

Birthday Party Tomorrow

Monkey's 1st Birthday Party Wednesday!

Calling all of Monkey's friends, we are having the party of a lifetime tomorrow at Best Friends Spring during doggy daycamp hours.  Come one come all, it's going to be a blast.  We are having cake from Barker Street, and LOTS of activities.  We will begin the party by playing "pin the tail on the camp counselor", then we will move on to our "water bowl relay races", then we will settle down for a little game of "Dog, Dog, Cat" (A.K.A. duck, duck, goose).  Then we will all go on a "dog biscuit scavenger hunt" and bring all our cookies back to eat with the cake!  After cake and pictures, we will finish up the party with a "how low can you go" limbo contest until mom and dad come to pick us up.  Be there or be square!  Oh, and don't let Monkey's painted toenails fool you, she can hang with the big dogs, and is usually the biggest competitor to beat at all the games!

Did you know that pets who walk on "de-iced" sidewalks and driveways are prone to dry, chapped paws? The pain from this happening will make them want to lick their paws. Injestion of the chemicals used to "de-ice" can cause gastrointestinal upset.

Housebreaking

Begin as soon as the puppy arrives in your home. Young puppies should be taken out immediately upon waking and just before retiring, as well as multiple times during the day. Most puppies cannot "hold it" for long periods so it will be necessary to take the puppy out almost every hour at first (especially after periods of play, naps, and mealtimes), and then gradually increase the amount of time between visits to the "bathroom." Take the puppy to the same area each time and praise it immediately and enthusiastically when it eliminates. Do not play with, or talk to, the puppy until after it has eliminated. Remember, if the puppy doesn't eliminate outside, its urine and feces are being saved for deposit inside your house!

Keeping up with Pet Care
1) Don’t skimp on wellness care! Too many diseases and parasites are prevented by inexpensive vaccines and medications.
2) When emergencies occur, talk to your veterinarian. Don’t try to treat the wound yourself with bandages or topical ointments. These steps are rarely helpful.
4) Never give human medications to your pets without authorization from your veterinarian. Many pet poisonings are due to this well-intentioned act.
5) Do exercise with your pet! A tired pet is a happy pet and less likely to look for trouble!
6) Keep your pet’s weight at optimal levels. Obese pets are prone to costly diseases like diabetes, arthritis and certain cancers.
7) Love your pet each day! These daily touches can find little lumps and bumps before they turn into big expensive masses!
8) Consider a pet health savings plan or even insurance for your pet. A little money put aside today could be a life-saver for your pet tomorrow.
9) Talk with your veterinarian about the essentials of your pet’s care.
